How to Make Friends While Solo-Traveling
Just because you travel solo, doesn’t mean that you have to spend the whole trip alone! Some of my best solo trips have been due to the people that I’ve met. Making friends while solo traveling can make your trip that much more of a rewarding and enriching experience. Here are some suggestions to help you connect with others and make lasting memories during your journey.
Stay in Social Accommodations:
Hostels, guesthouses, and boutique hotels with communal spaces are excellent places to meet fellow travelers. Common areas like lounges, kitchens, and shared dorms provide opportunities for casual conversations and bonding.
Join Group Tours and Activities:
Participate in group tours, city walking tours, cooking classes, or adventure activities. These settings naturally bring together like-minded people who share similar interests, making it easier to strike up conversations and form connections. Almost every major city offers free or donation-based walking tours, making them an excellent starting point.
Use Social Media and Apps:
Many apps and websites are designed to connect travelers. Platforms like Meetup, Couchsurfing, and travel-focused Facebook groups can help you find local events, or fellow travelers eager to connect. I've found social media groups on Facebook or WhatsApp, such as "Expats in Brazil" or "Americans in Shanghai," a great resource for connecting with other travelers or expats living abroad.
Attend Social Events:
Keep an eye out for local events, festivals, or gatherings happening in the area you're visiting. These can be cultural celebrations, music concerts, or even a language exchange. I once met fellow travelers at a free jazz concert in a town square while exploring the Dominican Republic.
Remember that not every interaction will result in a lasting friendship, and that's okay. The goal is to enjoy the moments, embrace new experiences, and be open to the connections that come your way. Always prioritize your safety and trust your instincts when interacting with new people.
